RV Solar Kit Common Components |
| RV Solar Kits are rather low-cost, simple systems that can provide more than enough power for regular camping needs, as well as large, full-sized RVs that have all the comforts of home including lights, TVs, Stereos, Refrigerators, Fans, and even Air Conditioners.
There are really only a few critical components that are required for an RV Solar Kit to Operate: |
| Critical Components |
Purpose |
| Solar Panels |
The Solar Panels are the heart of your RV Solar Kit. The Solar Panels (no matter how many, and of what power you have chosen) convert the sun's light into electricity that you can use to charge the batteries of your RV and power appliances and other comforts while you are traveling and camping in your RV. |
| Charge Controller |
The Charge Controller acts like the brain of your RV Solar Kit. The Charge Controller regulates the energy being transmitted from your solar panels into the batteries that are being charged. When the batteries are fully charged, the Charge Controller will not allow any additional power to be transmitted to them in order to prevent them from being over-charged and damaged. |
| Wiring |
Think of the Wiring as the veins and arteries of your RV Solar Kit. It is along the Wiring that the power from your Solar Panels travels through to your Charge Controller, to the Batteries, and from there to your standard RV Appliances or to other appliances and inverters for use. |
| Batteries |
Batteries are a critical component of your RV Solar Kit. Batteries are what your RV Solar Kit will keep charged and ready for use, which allows you to draw power from them to use your appliances, lights, TV's and other necessities and comforts. Many people simply use their standard RV batteries with their RV Solar Kit, but many others will purchase additional batteries for power storage to extend the usefullness of their system and increase the number of appliances and comforts they can use while on the road or at the campground. |
There are also a number of non-critical, or optional components that you can incorporate into your RV Solar Kit to make life easier, and the make the system even more useful. |
| Optional Components |
Purpose |
| DC to AC Inverter |
In case all of the appliances in your RV are not 12, 24, or 48VDC, or in case your have brought ammenities from home that need to have AC Power (standard power at your home) to operate, it is recommended that RV Solar Kit owners invest in a small DC to AC Power Inverter. Depending on what is to be run off of the inverter, as little 75W up to around 400W inverters are recommended. |
| Additional Batteries |
While the standard batteries that come with your RV may be sufficient for some small, necessary appliances, if you are looking to bring the comforts of home on the road with you, you will likely want to invest in additional batteries to store power for your high-consumption appliances. |
